02-Feb:
White Lands in Nicol's Quarter
After the Draw ... Malcolm Willstrop
There was no doubt that the draw for this most intriguing British
Championship was going to be highly significant.
With holder John White floating about like an Exocet Missile in the
5/8 area, where he landed was certain to have a major effect on the final
outcome, especially after his win in Chicago.
Quality Quarter in Prospect
As it turned out he finished up in Peter Nicol's quarter, which
means a quarter-final meeting, potentially, between the winner of the last
two PSA tournaments.
The spectators will relish the Friday night, but I doubt if the players
concerned are best suited.
Beachill Smiling
Lee Beachill, on the other hand, may even permit himself a smile at
his draw. Apart from the lapse against Amr Shabana in Chicago he has been
the epitome of consistency for a long time now.
Potentially he plays Nick Matthew in the semi-finals, and although
Matthew has been a massive success story, he has not as yet offered
Beachill a serious challenge. There is always a first time, but Manchester
is Beachill's stomping ground and should they meet, it would be a surprise
were Matthew to win. Not that the men's game doesn't produce surprises.
James v the Vets
James Willstrop, the other main seed, has a veteran pair to get
past. Nick Taylor, on home territory but coaching now and light of former
years - or shall I say heavy! - and Simon Parke, who can feel well pleased
with his 2004/05.
Should he do so the probability is that Nicol or White await in the
semi-final. That match will surely appeal to the viewers, especially those
who remember the Crucible epic with White.
From a personal point of view there is a chance of a Beachill - Willstrop
final, a prospect which certainly pleases me - not that too many care
about pleasing me! Should that happen, I may have to announce my
retirement, which will be a relief to many and a sadness to few!!
