Steve MEADS
Have you prepared especially for the Nationals?
No. I address all my games with the same mental attitude, looking at who
I’m playing, assess who they are, and play accordingly.
What is your main motivation for participating in these Nationals?
Now, I try and play my best, if I get a win, I’m happy with that. So my
ambition is to have a good game. You know, I played my first Nationals in
1986, at age 16, and unless I’m mistaken, I’ve played all of them. And
it’s now 10 years since I won the Nationals, it was in 1995…
What is your aim for squash in general?
Well, my goal is to be able to go on court, against guys who are still
playing full time, and hope I can give them a decent run out, and get the odd win now
and again… That’s all I’m aiming for… I’m not trying to improve rankings,
I’m just happy to play.
Best squash memory ?
It’s hard to reduce it to just one game. I honestly love every game I
played, some I remember more than others. When I retired from PSA, I wrote
down my ten most memorable games and it was interesting that six of those
games I actually lost. Of course, my most memorable win would be the
Nationals against Nick Taylor.
Boy that must a loud one…
Yes, euh, it was a fairly memorable game… I don’t think that Nick and I
spoke for quite a while after that…
And another memorable loss?
It was a strange game really… It was losing to Jansher in Bombay in 96 or
97 in 5. It was just at the end of Jansher’s career.
Your winners for the Nationals?
Lee Beachill or John White.
