ROUND UP

Well, I’m sorry to say that I probably won’t remember this tournament as one
of my best memories ever, as so many things went wrong that it’s a joke
really…
But come on, woman, look on the bright side… |

 |
On the squash front, we saw some stunning matches, and the players that
stood out are Simon Parke (his matches against Phil Barker and of
course, of course, his classic quarter against James Willstrop), Alison
Walters, who impressed me (and a lot of people, let me tell you) and who
should be one of the top five in the two years to come, James Willstrop
(whose encounters with experienced Sir Simon and genius John White will stay
in the memories of all the spectators) and Nick Matthew, who I
believe has reached a new level in his career today, as he got dangerously
close to Lee Beachill for the first time in his life. |
|
As usual, a perfectly organised and orchestrated tournament, thanks to
Jim Quigley and his team, Yawar Abbas and all the members of
England Squash… |
The volunteers always helpful, smiling, efficient, always a kind
word, without whom this event COULDN’T happen….
The sponsors, bless them, without whom this even WOULDN’T happen…
Judy at the desk (assisted by Paul from England Squash) whose
efficiency, kindness, availability and dedication are legendary… |
Howard Harding, who has just been reappointed PR for England Squash
after four years of absence, and who is, in my opinion, the best English PR,
always working flat out to try and help the press to do their job in the
best environment possible…
Malcolm Willstrop, the happiest man in squash today, as his “two
sons” are in final of the Nationals for the first time ever, who has been
kind enough to share with us his knowledge and analysis of the event… |
Linda Davie, who worked flat out to cover as many matches as she
could on her “day off” from refereeing, and of course, Mr Steve Cubbins,
Master of Webmasters, that the world and beyond would love to snatch away,
but who is not going anywhere, sorry guys…
Etc. Etc. Etc… |
But most of all, most of all, the spectators, who “buzz” the place,
the players of all age groups and levels, the referees, the
officials, all those people who, like you who are reading those words,
have all one point in common…
A true passion for squash.
See you next year…
