"I
can't believe it, I did it at last!
"I've tried for the last three years, but always come up against
Liz Brown in the quarters, and to get to the final I had to get
past Helen, who I lost to from 7-3 up in the fifth in the
British Open.
"I went on the circuit for a few months, but I didn't play
seriously for a lot of years since, with three young kids it's
just not possible.
"I was unseeded, so there was no pressure on me, and I haven't
been well recently so had a restful couple of weeks leading into
the event, which probably helped. My hole strategy this week has
been to stay calm, stay calm, in the last three years I've been
really nervous.
"Yes, I've done it at last!"

Women's O55 Champion,
Bett Dryhurst
"I enjoy coming here, but I must
admit I get lost every time!
"It's quite nice to win the Over 55 event, especially since I'm
61 and we had to play twice in a day. That actually worked out
well, if it had been over more days we would have got stiff.
"I'm pleased with that, I'll keep on training and I'm looking
forward to next year."

[1] Mark
Woodliffe bt [3/4] Alan Thompson O45
9/3, 9/2, 9/0 (27m)
"This
court suits me more than him, and I knew that if I kept on
attacking he'd struggle.
"We'll be meeting in the Home Internationals in May on a
traditional court, I'm sure he'll be looking for revenge then.
"I'm now level with my dad on Nationals titles at 2-all, but
he's got a final to play tomorrow of course, but he's ahead 3-1
on British Opens and 1-0 on World titles ..."

MASTERS SOUNDBITES ... Mia Stewart in Sportcity
Friday 16th Feb |
I
was very nervous at the start, but I lost 3/2 soit was a good
game. The courts are nice, but the lighting makes it difficults
to volley. The whole experience is really nice for us oldied to
watch the matches and to have family and friends see you play.
Ann Windle (O50)
I just won 3/1, it was very hard and I'm very tired. I'll see
how I recover from today for tomorrrow's semi-final.
Peter Gunter
I
was worried about myopponent, I've not played him for 12 years.
He's been very successful, he's played all over the world and
I'd expect him to win.
John Shaw (O65)

It was a tough match, very tiring. It's very dark overhead which
makes you lose the ball. I'll definitely be entering next year
and I'll be going for another title.
David Lumsden
Very
very hard match,. It got a bit tense, but I sneaked through in
the end. Raymond is a hard opponent but a very good friend. The
courts are very different from what I'm used to. I'm not looking
forward to playing another good friend tomorrow, John Clark, who
I'm staying with. He'll either poison me or get me very drunk
tonight!
I thouroughly enjoy the championships, well organised and nice
to see everyone. It's good fun, especiallywhen you win. I've
entered lots of times before and this ism my last shot at the
O40s, I'm looking forward to the O45s.
Martin Greenslade
I'm
a bit disappointed to lose. I tried my best but the glass
courtis very strange.
I was hitting the ball well and it was a long match.
It's my first year but I'll definitely be back, I'm happy to get
to the semi-finals.
Jamie Goodrich

My game was good, very hard, I played him last year, he's an
ex-England player so I knew it wasn't going to be easy. The
courts are very difficult because of the glass panels rather
than the brick we're used to. It's another stepup tomorrow
against John Smith in the semis.
Chris Ansell (O60 #3)
|

I enjoyed the game but I didn't enjoy the defeat. Over
the years I've played John a lot, we're from the same
club, and as much as I wanted to win I didn't expect to.
The courts are ok but the lighting isn't good and the
walls should be painted white at the top.
Ken Johnson
Are you taking down the complaints?
John Smith
 |
| |

Yes, I always enjoy my
games. I've got to the final on a few occasions before,
I always hope to win but it gets harder as you get
older. I'd never played him before, and someone unknown
is always a threat.
Brian Phillips (O65) |

I came to watch, to come
and see some good squash. I play for the county and I
hope to enter ther over 50s next year, and I hope to win
...

MASTERS SOUNDBITES ... Mia Stewart in Sportcity
Thursday 15th Feb |

It's my second time in the O40 event, I lost in the finalsd last
year, hoping to go one better this time, especially since it's
my birthday on the day of the final!
Peter Gunter (O40)
I was in the O40s last year, the courts are great, although it's
a bit unusual and distracting that you can hear the ball fromthe
other courts. It's a fantastic facility, great that it's in
Manchester as this is my hometown.
Jamie Maddocks (O40)
It was difficult game, my opponent was just too steady. We play
very different games with quite different styles, he likes to
hack it! I found the courts a little inconsistent. I'm
originally Scottish but playing for Winchester now.
Kevin McKay (O40)
It
was a good game, it's always nice to beat a seed. The only
problem is that you tend to lose the ball on the black floor
behind the court.
I won the Durham & Cleveland and East of Scotland Over 70s this
year and was runner-up in the West of Scotland, but this is the
best result of my career.
Malcolm McArthur (O70)

It'm my first masters competition, I usedto play in the North
West Counties but I had a hip injury and had to stop playing fo
ra while. My opponent is very much a threat, but a really nice
chap, so I'm expecting an entertaining game ...
Anthony Snowdon (O55)
It
was a good game, it's always a good game when you win. I love it
here, the beer's excellent. I've been playing for 55 years and I
still love it just as much.
John Shaw (O65)
It
was a reasonably comfortable game, I won 3-0. I've played O40s
twice before and only lost once. I didn't play last year so it's
nice to come back and see all the familiar faces.
Colin Payne (O40)
It's
going to be a big upset, I'm looking forward to my match against
the top seed. I'm hoping to win without expecting to, but I'll
be going all out for that upset ...
Jonathan Glidden (O35)
I'm
looking forward to it, after driving all the way up from
Brighton. I won the O55 last year, I've been doing it for years
and I'm still fit and moving.
Phil Ayton (O60) |
| |

I'd smile if I could ... Fantastic game, full of good
humour and fun ... I'm going to enjoy a beer now.
Geoff Howes (O55) |

I'm very happy, just beaten the number three seed in the
quarter-final!
I'm just about to play the number two seed, I'll be even
happier when I beat him!
Neil Nightingale (O55) & Leon Kirton (O55) |

I had to concede after the third game, I pulled my calf
muscle, I went to see the physio and it looks like I'll
be out for about four weeks. The courts are warm, which
is good, but you sometimes get funny bounces off the
screws in the back wall. It's not like when I was
playing in Pakistan with Jahangir!
With squash being a minority sport, it's unfortunate
that you can't make a lot of money unless you're at the
very top. It hurts to see footballers getting 50,000 a
week and moaning, squash players do it for love ...
