Men's Qualifying Finals:
Ford's Wish Granted
Kent number two Ben Ford came through two qualifying rounds today
at the National Squash Centre in Manchester and promptly had his wish
granted.
"I'd like to play Peter Nicol," he said after winning his qualifying final
against Wales' Jethro Binns. "It would be good to be able to say that
you've played him ..."
Most of the other qualifiers will be jealous - we asked them all who they
would like to play in the main draw, and seven out of eight chose the
former world champion, double Commonwealth champion and winner of over 50
major titles.
Good luck Ben ... we think you might need it !
Tuesday promises to be the most hectic day of the tournament as the
age-groups get under way - 44 matches to be played including the main
men's draw ...

Harford
and Gibson
Martin Gibson bt Jonny Harford
11/8, 11/5, 11/7 (32m) plays Matthew
"I
wanted that one, I was really up for it. He beat me last time we
played, and had the edge on me as a junior, so I’m pleased with that.
"Nick Matthew? I’ve got a game plan – get on the T and hit 27 - no, 33
- nicks!"
 |

Barnett
& Haycocks
David Barnett bt Jaymie
Haycocks
10/11(2-4), 11/9, 6/11, 11/4, 11/4 (57m)
plays Barker
"I
got to the qualifying finals last year, so I was hoping to go one
better. I lost to Jaymie last time we played, but tonight was good.
"I should have won the second, and then when I lost the third I was
really tired. But he seemed to tire too, which gave me a bit of
confidence, so I stepped forward a bit and won fairly comfortably in
the end."

"At
2-1 up I was feeling fine physically, I didn’t feel under pressure at
all. But I just didn’t do anything in the fourth and fifth.
"At least the lucky loser spot will give me a chance to make amends
for that performance."
 |

Tate &
Richards
"The
first two were quite comfortable, but I could tell I was losing
concentration in the middle of the third.
"But a win’s a win, as they say …"

"Last
year I lost in the first round of qualifiers, this year in the second
round, so I’ll be back next year looking to go one better again ..."
 |

Hinds &
Rushworth |
Ben Ford bt Jethro Binns
11/9, 11/7, 11/6 (38m) plays Nicol
"It
was tough until the middle of each game, but he seemed to lose
concentration about half way through each of them.
"I was trying to just keep the ball tight and stop him volleying.
"It would be great to play Peter Nicol in the first round, if only to
say you'd played him in a tournament ..."
 |

Binns &
Ford
Kristen Johnson bt Nick Wall
11/4, 11/3, 11/2 (23m)
plays Genever
"Happy
with that, I thought I played well – hitting the ball and moving well,
can’t ask for more than that.
"I played badly this morning, had to fight for it, but tonight
everything seemed to click.
"I’d love to play Peter Nicol, or if I can’t have him then somebody
injured!"

"I
wasn’t very tight and he was, that’s all.
"It’s so hot on bouncy on there it’s hard to put the ball away … well
it was for me, anyway.
"I’ll be 35 next year, so I’ll be entering that and leaving these
youngsters to it."
 |

Wall &
Johnson
Shaun Le Roux bt Sam Miller
11/4, 11/9, 8/11, 10/5 conceded(52m) plays Barrington
"I
played my first PSA tournament in Prague last week and got to the
semis, and to get through to the Nationals for the first time is just
great.
"I felt I should have won 3/0 – I let it slip in the third and it got
a bit physical in the fourth, but I knew what it would be like."
Shawn Le Roux |

Le Roux
& Miller
Joel Hinds bt Phil Rushworth
11/7, 11/10(2-0), 11/10(6-4) (57m)
plays Gough
"Happy
to get through that in three. I came out fast in the first game,
playing lots of shots, but then I got complacent.
"I managed to sneak the second, and he wasn’t going to win from two
down. I was ahead for most of the third, and at the end he just kept
on saving match balls!"
Joel Hinds
"I
can’t believe I lost that 3-0. It was 7-all in the first and he hit
three dead nicks, rollers.
"Then I got to ten first in the second and third games .. I could
easily have been 2-1 up and I lost 3-0."
